It all started with a dinner I attended last year in North Beach, San Francisco’s Italian neighborhood.  I, of course, was running a bit late; but when I walked into the private dining room of North Beach Restaurant, downstairs, everyone stood to greet me, and there it was.  That unmistakable sign of a culture:  All the men had their napkins buttoned to the top of their shirt and tucked in their jackets.  Just like in Italy.  A lasting symbol of the place they had all left early in their life.  And I instantly felt at home.

The occasion? A frequent gathering of Italian men who had all immigrated to San Francisco at the same time and became long lasting friends.  They dine together, taking turns hosting, and I was a guest.  The gathering sometimes includes up to 50 people, and of course, some incredible restaurateurs and chefs.  But also lawyers, judges, business owners, sports figures, across the board.

Last month was my turn to host; and what an honor.  We sat outside in Yountville on the patio of our NapaStyle Paninoteca, wine bar and store.  Next time, I’ll host them at Bottega after it opens.  The menu was incredibly fun to do, with family style antipasti, a Zinfandel Pasta, and a whole roast pig.  The guest of honor had the privilege of eating the eyeballs!  Chef’s Nick Ritchieand Stefano Particelli were on hand, along with our GM, Joel Hoachuck.

These are the kind of long, large group meals I remember so fondly from my family when I was growing up.
